250 Films in 2012

Hello lovelies!

Here's where I'll be keeping a running tab of the 250 films I hopefully will be watching this year! What I'm particularly focusing on watching this year are:

  • Pre-codes. As exciting as they sound, I fail at this genre. I really want to remedy that this year and so I vow to definitely see more films made before the year 1934!
  • Silents. I've only seen three or four of these and I really want to give them more of a chance. I guess this kind of falls under pre-codes, too, because most silents are pre-codes.
  • 1960's fluff. The 60's brought change to Hollywood. There were films that pushed the envelope of the quickly dying Hays Code and more fluffier films that were geared to the teeny bopper audience that decided the trends of pop culture. I've seen a lot of Doris Day's rom-com pairings with Rock Hudson and Natalie Wood's glossier films of that era... so what I mean by this is (and don't laugh) the Sandra Dee/Bobby Darin/Annette Funicello/Frankie Avalon stuff. Like Gidget and Beach Party. Now, I know they're probably not the best films or the most serious, but being a teenager of this generation I think these movies would give me a good perspective of what it was like for the teenagers of that generation. Kind of a pop culture experience... sort of...
  • Film noir. You'd think after participating in Film Classics's contest in the summer of 2011, I would have brushed up more on this genre but not yet. I'm taking it in at little doses so far but I really need to catch up on this genre!
  • Filmographies. I'm also working on completing the filmographies of my favorite actresses, particularly Lucy.

And I'm also focusing on 10 actors [Errol Flynn, Tyrone Power, John Wayne, Robert Taylor, Montgomery Clift, Paul Newman, Laurence Olivier, Marlon Brando, Steve McQueen, Charlie Chaplin] and 10 actresses [Greta Garbo, Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner, Hedy Lamarr, Norma Shearer, Marlene Dietrich, Jean Harlow, Clara Bow, Paulette Goddard, Gene Tierney]. I haven't seen enough of all 20, and this year and this meme will give me the opportunity to do it!

For more my film and blogging goals of 2012: go here.

You're welcome to leave as many suggestions as you like, they're all very much appreciated! :) This is a growing list because I'm determined to reach this goal, and therefore I encourage you to drop by often to see what I've added. Also, if I have written a review for the film, I've attached the link.

As of now [January 2012] I am including rewatches, but if I have reached my goal by the end of August, then I will try to make up for the rewatches by films I haven't already seen. I don't rewatch films all that often, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Now, let's get on with the show! <3

Is there any place I can see what you have already watched Rianna? That way I can make better suggestions.

Well, for what films I've seen in general, no there isn't - there are too many to count, haha! But as for pre-codes and silents, just go ahead and suggest anything as I have only seen one or two movies or perhaps none of each genre. As for 1960's fluff, I particularly mean the real teeny bopper, Sandra Dee/Bobby Darrin, Annette Funicello/Frankie Avalon stuff, which I have seen none of. I've seen plenty of the Doris Day and Rock Hudson type.

In film noir, I've seen: "The Dark Corner", "To Have and Have Not", "The Big Sleep" and "Gilda" - that's all I can think of.

As for the actors, I have seen nothing of Errol Flynn, Montgomery Clift, Laurence Olivier, and Steve McQueen. Tyrone Power: "Witness for the Prosecution", John Wayne: "The Searchers", Robert Taylor: "When Ladies Meet", Paul Newman: "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", Marlon Brando: "A Streetcar Named Desire". I have seen at least one Charlie Chaplin movie, but I can't remember the name.

In actresses, I have seen nothing of Greta Garbo, Norma Shearer, Jean Harlow, and Clara Bow. Rita Hayworth: "Gilda", Lana Turner: "A Bachelor in Paradise", Hedy Lamarr: "My Favorite Spy", Marlene Dietrich: "Witness for the Prosecution", Susan Hayward: "Adam's Four Sons", Gene Tierney: "Heaven Can Wait".

I hope that helps!

I will come up with more later but for right now, Baby Face and Five Star Final are essential Pre-Codes.

Thanks for your suggestions. I watched one of my 'first' pre-codes last night and I think I'll enjoy the genre.

Rianna said...

CORRECTION: I've seen Laurence Olivier in "Rebecca".

Glad to see you saw and loved Leave Her to Heaven. I went through a Gene Tierney run in 2011 and enjoyed most of it. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is another very good one.

And you should have fun with the precodes. Some of my favourites are Safe in Hell, The Last Flight, Three on a Match, Wild Boys of the Road and Union Depot.

I loved Leave Her to Heaven. I'm working my way through the femme fatales, but so far Gene Tierney's Ellen is the worst I've seen. I plan on seeing The Ghost and Mrs. Muir soon; Natalie Wood is one of my favorite actresses and she plays Gene's daughter in that.

Thanks for your pre-code suggestions!

I also have a goal about movies this year: to watch more silents and more westerns. Until now I'm going very well with the silents : )
Last year I've watched 230 movies. I've watched 42 movies in 2012 so far.

Rianna said...

I need to watch more westerns, too, but I'm really not a fan of them so I gave myself a break and didn't choose that genre :) I'm so behind in this challenge; I've seen only 31 and I doubt I'll make it to 250. Congrats on seeing 230 last year!

Hi. I just found your site and saw your movie goals for the year. I would love to make some suggestions for a few of your actors. You happened to pick some of me favorites. For John Wayne: Searchers, Red River, Rio Bravo, Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and The Shootist. Montgomery Clift:The Search, The Heiress, From Here To Eternity, Place In The Sun, and even though it is a small part, Judgment At Nuremberg. For Chaplin it is easy: Modern Times, City Lights, The Dictator, and The Gold Rush. Brando may be even easier: The Men, Streetcar Named Desire, Julius Caesar, On The Waterfront, and of course Godafather. Finally, Paul Newman: Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Hud, Torn Curtain, and The Sting. Last year my goal was 500, and this year I'm going for 700 total, with 350 first time viewings. I hope you reach your goal and thanks for watching the classics!
